Chevrolet Retail Experience

Reimagining Chevrolet’s dealership of the future began with extensive field research, visiting dealerships around the world and talking to customers, dealers, and GM leadership about their current processes, what worked and didn’t work, and their view of what the future dealership could and should be.
We developed a design strategy based on the intent to transform the painpoints associated with buying and servicing cars into positive emotional experiences. The strategy is inspired by human needs, wants, and behaviors, and is built on a strong foundation of four pillars - Forward Tradition, Transparency, Engagement, and Empowerment - which serve as guardrails, assuring consistency in showroom, garage, and satellite stores across the globe.
Our team designed two mockups, constructed at different levels of fidelity, that allowed continuing research and refinement based on direct feedback from users. The ongoing design effort encompasses space, touchpoints, and technology to enable new interactions at existing retrofit dealerships, in addition to exploring the future state of new-build dealerships.

Marcom Studios

Two studios for a rapidly growing marketing/communications team incorporate 100,000 square feet to create state-of-the-art space containing break out and meeting spaces, specialized team rooms, and dedicated presentation space.

Composed of Interactive, Cross Functional, Creative, Retail Windows, Print, and Packaging teams, the group required a highly flexible and collaborative workspace. A central core, augmented with new skylights, creates an open zone for library and break out functions. The core is anchored by the kitchen, which includes a full service espresso and gelato bar in addition to a self-serve brown bag area and communal tables. A landscaped outdoor patio serves as an extension of the kitchen and offers informal meeting space.

The material palette is quiet and sophisticated, supplementing existing concrete floors and exposed glulam beams with fabrics and finishes in neutral grays and white.

Manka’s Inverness Lodge

Manka’s is a Northern California restaurant and lodge that pioneered the concept of locally sourced food through relationships with farmers, fishermen, and artisans. The original lodge structure, a roadhouse built in the 1920’s and set in the wooded hills above Tomales Bay, was destroyed by a fire in 2007.

We worked with the owners, a husband and wife team, to design a new lodge that would be built on the same site and in the spirit of the original Manka’s. We also worked closely with the local planning authorities to adapt the design to unique zoning and code requirements.

The new design focuses on elements that made the original experience unique: a warm, intimate dining room and lounge downstairs, exterior porches and balconies, and cozy, rustic guest rooms upstairs with views over the bay. We developed the concept of a central “core” for the building, a concrete structure that houses fireplaces and nooks, and provides the visual and structural bones of the lodge.

Pualeilani Atrium Shops

Located on Kalakaua Avenue (the main shopping and entertainment spine of Waikiki), the Pualeilani Atrium Shops make up a 3-level retail development with two Hyatt towers above. This project looks at refreshing the retail and public spaces, wayfinding, and flow through the development, while creating a new draw and focal point.

The design takes advantage of the open-air space at the center of the building. Parallel, 6-story vertical green walls, nicknamed “The Arbor”, are inserted into the atrium, creating a central focal point at the crossroads of the main circulation axes. Within The Arbor, pop up retail spaces, reflecting pools, vertical circulation, and lookout points are housed to create a bustling hub that is visible from Kalakaua Avenue.

A new roof deck, bar, and infinity pool on the third level create a draw, while architectural treatments along the exterior, including new cladding and signage, create a cohesive and modern image.

Union Larder

	Union Larder is

a neighborhood wine bar, cafe, and speciality grocery located in San Francisco’s Russian Hill. The space was originally part of a parking garage built in the 1920’s. Existing concrete structures have been exposed, and large structural steel elements have been added, which influence the aesthetics and design language of the space.
In collaboration with local craftsmen, furniture and light fixtures were designed that reference the industrial nature of the building. The interior is supplemented with selected pieces of reclaimed furniture, and the space is complemented by natural light and a warm, sophisticated material palette consisting of leather, wood, blackened steel.

Union Larder was awarded Wine Bar of the Year by Imbibe Magazine, and was also recognized by 7x7 and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Pacific Gas and Electric Headquarters

Pacific Gas and Electric invited several design firms to prepare concepts for a refresh of the utility company’s executive tower lobby in San Francisco.

The PG&E headquarters consists of two buildings connected at ground level by a covered breezeway. Eight Inc. won the competition with a design that reconsiders the exterior plaza and interior arrival, meeting, and cafe spaces as connected opportunities for PG&E to engage with the community.

We proposed enclosing the breezeway and creating a hub between the two towers to serve as a venue for community meetings, educational events, and as a touchdown space for employees to meet and interact.

The executive tower lobby is reimagined as a clean, contemporary, light-filled space that facilitates interactions between visitors and employees. Backlit, transparent LCD screens provide content and presentation surfaces, and communal seating elements create a landscape within the space that encourages informal conversations and interactions.

Nokia wanted to introduce a branded experience for visitors to their 7,000-seat theater in downtown Los Angeles. The design is a 4-story glowing glass element inserted into the atrium of the theater lobby. The element is constructed from white back-painted glass panels lit from within by LEDs, and the entire volume slowly changes colors in harmony with the surrounding atrium space.

Visitors experience the element in various ways: as a glowing beacon visible from the exterior plaza, as a backdrop to the vertical circulation within the atrium, and as branded interactive vitrines at each level of the lobby. At the vitrines, visitors can touch and feel Nokia products, which are supported by a backdrop of digital brand stories and product information.
